Special notes

 

  • The energy produced by ESWT results in the disruption of calcification/fibrosis
  • Calcification/fibrosis nearly always present with chronic inflammation
  • There in no effect on healthy tissue
  • Pain Management - The treatment has an effect on nerves. Release on endorphins (natural pain killers)
  • Healing - thought to speed up healing by increasing blood circulation and increasing metabolism
  • 90% of patients will feel worse 24 hours after treatment
  • No anti inflammatory medication should be taken during treatment
  • some patient's may develop a haematoma (bruise) post treatment
  • There are contra-indications to treatment
  • No anaesthesia is required
  • You must refrain from physical exercise/loading during the entire treatment cycle
  • Shocks are applied to the painful area
  • Gel coupling medium is required
  • 200-400 shocks are administered at low energy (1.5-2 bar) to produce analgesic effect before you are taken to the therapeutic intensity necessary

 

Contra-indications (people for whom treatment is not suitable)

 

  • Pregnant women
  • Diabetics (unless well controlled and with written authority of their Doctor)
  • Patients with pacemakers (although treatment of knee/achilles and heel is no problem)
  • Children under 15 years
  • Acute stages of inflammation (can be commenced in sub acute phase 5 to 7 days after injury/symptoms)
  • Patients who are hypersensitive or of a nervous disposition
  • Cemented prosthesis
  • Patients with tumours
  • Capillary fragility - patient's who bruise easily
  • Patients who are on anti-coagulant therapy
  • Patients with Osteoporosis
  • Patients who have received a cortico-steroid injection less than 6 weeks before treament with RSWT is to commence
